Exodus 12:1-14,

1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt: 2 “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over the fire, with the head, legs and internal organs. 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover.

12 On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. 14 This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance.

Today, our topic is called The Passover Lamb.

What does Passover mean? It means to pass over; when it reaches your doorstep, it does not enter but passes by, that is Passover.

Why do the Israelites celebrate Passover? What does this Passover have to do with us?

The book of Exodus records an event where Pharaoh had kept the Israelites in slavery for four hundred years. Slavery, as we shared last time, means working for free, receiving food in return, and after four hundred years, the Israelites were still slaves. Their cries reached God, and at this time, God sent Moses to save the Israelites.

At first, Pharaoh was unwilling to let the Israelites go because who would want to let go of free labor? At this time, Moses warned Pharaoh that if he did not let God’s people go, God would bring calamity upon the land. Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he refused to let them go. As a result, ten great plagues fell upon Egypt.

What was the tenth plague? Moses warned Pharaoh that if he did not let the Israelites go today, calamity would come upon him, striking down all the firstborn in Egypt. This is what happened during Passover.

How did God distinguish between His people and the Egyptians? God did not say, “Let me see who your ancestors are.” If you say, “Abraham,” then you can pass. It was not like that. God used a method, and this method was the way the Israelites could be saved from being struck down.

First, we need to understand three things:

The first thing is that the Passover lamb is just a shadow; the reality is Jesus Christ.

Second, it mentions the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which represents sinlessness. Eating unleavened bread during this feast symbolizes the absence of sin and evil.

The third thing we need to know is that during this Passover, the lamb was to be killed. The Israelites were saved from God’s wrath and from being struck down because of the blood of the lamb.

Today, let’s look at the first point: Separated from Death.

Let’s look at Exodus 11:4-7,

4 Moses said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. 5 Every firstborn in Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6 There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7 But among the Israelites, not a dog will bark at any person or animal.’ Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.”

Brothers and sisters, we often talk about holiness. This holiness is not something that people can achieve through effort; it is God who separates the Israelites from the Egyptians and sanctifies them.

Today, in this generation, how does God separate His people? It is through worship and reading the Bible that He separates His people. Those who do not believe in Jesus will not come.

Look at what God said to Moses: “Tell this group of people that they must be different from the Egyptians; I will separate you from the Egyptians.”

What is God saying? He is saying that when I strike down all the firstborn, I will give you a sign, and this sign is the way I separate you, which is actually a sign of salvation.

“Among the Israelites, not a dog will bark at any person or animal, so that you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between you and the Israelites.” Who separates the people? It is not us who separate ourselves; it is God who separates us. Thank God!

God has His chosen people. In the Old Testament, God chose a group of people called the Israelites. In fact, these Israelites came from one man, Abraham. God told Abraham that He would make his descendants into a great nation, and God fulfilled His promise. Amen!

Today, we see that these people are sanctified by God; they are a group of people separated from death to be His people. Amen!

Ephesians 1:4 says: “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.”

Today, we should not ask God why He did not choose other nations but only the Israelites. Isn’t that a bit unfair? Don’t forget that today you are among this group of people. Out of more than six billion people in the world, God chose you, separating you from so many people and giving you to Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! Similarly, He has also separated you from death. Hallelujah!

Now, let’s see what method God used to separate people with this sign. The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This month is to be for you the first month.” What is God’s method of salvation? It is through a lamb. God redeemed the Israelites from death with a lamb. How are we saved today? We are also saved through that lamb, which is Jesus Christ. Everyone must go through Jesus Christ to escape death. Amen? There is only one person in the world who is called Christ, and He is called the Lamb of God. Hallelujah!

In John 1, John the Baptist said to Jesus, “Look, the Lamb of God!” In Revelation, it is mentioned in chapter 13, verse 8, that He is the Lamb who was slain. That “He” refers to our Lord Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!

So why does God say, “This month is to be for you the first month”? We know that this is around April or March. God said, “This month is to be the first month, the first month of your year.” Why not start counting from January? Why not from August or September? Why start counting from March or April? The Israelites did not have the lunar and solar calendar. Let’s look further into why God wanted to count like this.

Because this was the time of their salvation! Amen! This month is the month of their salvation, so God calls this month the first month. What is God trying to tell us? All those who are not saved are not counted by God; their days are in vain. Amen?

Do you remember the most mentioned word in Ecclesiastes? Vanity of vanities, everything is vanity. In the end, Solomon discovered that everything is vanity. It is not that Solomon did not enjoy life; he ate, drank, and used everything. Why did he say it was vanity? Because in God’s eyes, all of this was not counted. That is a very regrettable thing!

Before a person is saved, their days are also not counted by God. So don’t look at some people who are forty or fifty years old; as long as they have not believed in Jesus and been saved, their days in God’s eyes are in vain! But the moment this person believes in the Lord Jesus, from that day on, God begins to remember their days. In other words, the moment they accept the Lord Jesus, God starts recording their days. Just like the Bible says, “If you give a cup of cold water to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you will certainly not lose your reward,” it proves that after your salvation, every day is counted by God.

But God does not count your evil deeds; He counts what you have done for the Lord. Your evil deeds are not counted. You may ask where this is found in the Bible. If you read Hebrews chapter 11 carefully, you will see that chapter 11 is called the Hall of Faith, and the descriptions of those people are extremely perfect!

By faith, Sarah; by faith, Abraham… It seems that these people never made mistakes in their lives. When we read Genesis, did Abraham make mistakes? Yes. Did Sarah make mistakes? Yes. But you see, Abraham believed in a God who brings the dead to life and calls things that are not as though they were. Even when he had no hope, he still believed in God. Did Abraham never doubt? No. But you find that in the Hall of Faith, the negative and those mistakes were not counted by God.

So in God’s presence, God also counts our days like this. What you have done for the Lord, what you have offered to the Lord, and what you have done, God has recorded it. But your evil? God has already forgotten it. Today we want to share why God no longer remembers it.

This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. When is a person saved? That month is their first month. Their age of believing in the Lord is their true life. Some people may be sixty years old, but if they have only believed in the Lord for a year, in God’s eyes, they are only one year old. The day of salvation is very important; everything before that is not counted by God. This month begins as the first month; your days start counting from now on. Hallelujah, thank the Lord!

Then on the tenth day of this month, each person is to take a lamb for their family, which is the beginning of Passover. The tenth day is exactly the same as our lunar calendar. There are two countries in the world that are quite special: one is China, which has both solar and lunar calendars; the other is Israel, which has a divine calendar and a worldly calendar. On the tenth day of this month, you are to take a lamb for your family.

The Passover lamb in the Old Testament symbolizes Jesus Christ. So when was Jesus taken in the New Testament? When did He enter Jerusalem? It was the week before Passover. If you read carefully, this should be in John chapter 12. Chapter 12, verse 1 says that six days before Passover, which was the ninth day of the first month, the next day was the tenth day of the first month. On that day, He entered Jerusalem, and all the Israelites saw Him. That day, Jesus rode on a donkey, and the crowd shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” On that day, Jesus rode into the city of Jerusalem.

Do you see that the timing is exactly the same as the Passover lamb we are sharing today? God told them that on the tenth day of the first month, each person should take a lamb. Wasn’t it preparing the lamb? Then, on the tenth day of the first month, Jesus Christ became the true Lamb of God. He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. What was His purpose for entering? He was to be offered as a sacrifice. The purpose of the Israelites taking this lamb on the tenth day of the first month was to offer it as a sacrifice because that was what God required. Hallelujah!

From that day on, in the New Testament, after Jesus entered Jerusalem, Judas began to plot to betray Jesus. These things were already recorded in the book of Exodus long ago. This lamb was to enter among you and ultimately be sold and killed. This lamb determined whether the Israelites could be saved. What characteristics did this lamb have?

Exodus 12:5 says, “The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect; you may take them from the sheep or the goats.”

Today, the core content we are talking about is this lamb, which is very important. It must be without defect and without blemish. The reason people cannot save themselves is that they have blemishes. What kind of blemishes? Everyone has fallen into sin, and the sacrificial offering must be without blemish and without defect.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And the Lord Jesus is the lamb without defect; He is the sinless lamb.

When Jesus was judged at the end, He said, “Which of you can prove me guilty of sin?” Can you tell me what sin I have committed? They said, “This man has blasphemed God; He says He is God; He says He is the Son of God.” Is that true? Yes, it is true. In the end, the Israelites crucified Jesus on the grounds that He said He was the Son of God. Did Jesus lie? No. He was indeed the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the lamb without defect mentioned in the Old Testament. Therefore, sacrifices to God must be without defect and without blemish.

Let’s look at verse 6: “Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.”

Keeping them until the fourteenth day of the month at twilight is also very important. Because our sins must be removed, we need a Savior to redeem us. Brothers and sisters, you know that Jesus Christ is called our Redeemer. I don’t know how you understand the term “Savior.” You may think that His power is great and can help me do something; that is the meaning of Savior.

But in Israel, the meaning of “Savior” is to buy him back at a great price.

For example, if a servant goes to someone else’s house and wants to redeem that person, he must pay the full price and buy him back. This person becomes his Redeemer, meaning he must pay a qualified price.

In the past, we did not believe in Jesus and belonged to the descendants of Adam; therefore, we were called sinners. How can we get rid of this identity as sinners? It is because Jesus Christ has to pay the redemption price for our sins and buy us back.

In the Bible, Ephesians 1:7 says, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins…”

The reason we are not called sinners but called righteous is that we can be redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Moreover, 1 Corinthians 6:20 also tells us, “You were bought at a price…”

Jesus bought our lives with His life; thank the Lord! This is the meaning of “Redeemer.” He paid this price to redeem us from evil. This lamb must be killed on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight. Let’s look at the New Testament; when did Jesus die?

In Matthew 27:45, it says, “From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.”

At that time, Jesus cried out in a loud voice from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Finally, He shouted, “It is finished.” He died. Was it at twilight? Yes.

At twilight, the Israelites did not have clocks; when they calculated time, they would pull a white rope outside the window. If they could not see the rope from inside the house, it meant that the next day had begun. The Israelites calculated time differently from us; they began the day in the evening, while we start at midnight. Based on current time, around 6 PM, the rope outside would become invisible. Was twilight around 3 PM?

Let’s look at what we just read in Matthew 27. From noon to three in the afternoon, noon is twelve o’clock; three in the afternoon is three o’clock. This again aligns with what the Old Testament says: “At twilight, you must slaughter the lamb.” In the New Testament, Jesus Christ gave His life for us at twilight. Hallelujah!

Jesus Christ was crucified at that time for us. Do you know what the Jews were doing when Jesus died? They were slaughtering the lambs in their homes. They did not know that the one crucified was the true Lamb of God. This is the confusion of the Israelites; they were slaughtering the lambs and celebrating Passover, but they did not know that this was just a shadow, and the reality had come! At this time, you should not hold onto the shadow; look at the reality instead; isn’t that better than the shadow?

Jesus Christ is that true lamb who has been offered for us. Thank the Lord! Who killed the lamb? We just read that at twilight, the whole community of Israel slaughtered the lamb. The book of Exodus was written around 1500 BC. Think about it; 1500 years before Christ, it already foreshadowed events that would happen 1500 years later.

When we return to Exodus, God said, “The whole community of Israel must slaughter the lamb.” So, 1500 years later, Jesus is that true lamb. When He rode on a donkey into the city, did He know who would kill Him? Yes, He knew. He knew that the people who shouted “Hosanna” would later say, “Crucify Him!” This perfectly fulfilled a prophecy from 1500 years ago. Hallelujah! So Jesus died at the hands of the Jews.

Today, when Jesus was offered, He not only redeemed the sins of the Israelites but also redeemed the sins of all humanity. Hallelujah! Let’s see how they were delivered from death and sin.

In verse 7, “Each household is to take some blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.”

Brothers and sisters, when they applied the blood of the lamb, the lamb had already died. They slaughtered the lamb, let the blood flow out, and applied the blood of the lamb to the doorframes and the tops of the door. Then all the Israelites stayed inside the house. This was their way to escape death. Thank the Lord! They took a bunch of hyssop, dipped it in the blood in the basin, and applied it to the doorframes and the tops of the doors. “No one is to leave their house until morning.”

God told them that when they applied the blood to the door, they were to go into their houses, and no one was allowed to come out until the next morning. Why not let them come out? “Because the LORD will pass through to strike down the Egyptians; when He sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the LORD will pass over that doorway, and He will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.” This is the content of Exodus 12:23.

The important point for the Israelites to be saved was that there was the blood of the lamb on their doors. Hallelujah, thank the Lord! Is this not our way of salvation? Yes.

When you believe in the blood of that lamb, which symbolizes the blood of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, His blood was also shed for us on the cross. Therefore, God no longer sees your sins; we are all in Jesus Christ! Just like the Israelites were inside the door, the angel of death had no right to enter the house with blood because of God’s justice.

Today, wherever you go, you are in Jesus Christ. The angel of death sees the precious blood of Jesus Christ and will leave you because you are in Jesus Christ. He cannot harm you; therefore, He cannot take your life away. Hallelujah! So, applying the blood of the lamb to the doorframes and the tops of the doors, under the covering of the blood, they could escape death.

In verse 13, “The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.”

Brothers and sisters, do you know? This is the only way the Israelites could escape this disaster. What did God say? He said, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” Who is this blood for? It is for God to see. Because where are the people now? Inside the house; can they see the blood outside? No. Just like today, after you are saved, can you see the precious blood of Jesus Christ outside of you? You cannot see it, but God has seen it. Hallelujah!

Many people say, “Why don’t I feel anything?” Salvation is not based on your feelings. Right now, all the Israelites are inside the house. The blood is outside. When the angel of death comes, he does not look at who is inside the house; he looks to see if there is blood on the door. In the future, when God judges people to enter heaven or go to hell, He will not look at your name or how you look; He will look to see if you have the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!

Do not say, “Why don’t I feel anything? I don’t see the Holy Spirit inside me.” This is not for you to see; it is for God to see. You may not understand the value of this blood. Do you think the Israelites knew the value of this blood? No, they did not. They only knew that God said to apply the blood of the lamb to the door, and then they applied it and stayed inside. But what does God see? Because there is blood on the door, I no longer care about whether the people inside have sinned! This is the true process of our salvation.

Although you cannot see it, at this time, you must believe that the blood of the lamb is already on your door. When there is the blood of the lamb, you can escape death.

Let’s think about it. If the Egyptians saw the Israelites applying the blood of the lamb, and they asked, “What are you doing?” The Israelites would tell them that God would strike down the firstborn of anyone who did not have the blood of the lamb on their door. Now, if an Egyptian did the same thing, would he die? No. Because God does not look at who is inside the house; He looks at whether there is blood on the door.

On the other hand, if a true Israelite said, “My ancestor is Abraham; I can see from the genealogy that I am indeed an Israelite,” would it matter whether he applied the blood or not? He would die for sure. What matters is not how good your behavior is or where you come from; what matters is whether you have the blood of the lamb!

Today, our salvation is the same. At this time, it has nothing to do with your behavior. Whether you can be saved is determined by whether you have accepted Jesus Christ and whether you believe in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. When you believe, God will give you a sign, and that sign is whether the Holy Spirit dwells within you. Just like the blood of the lamb, it is something for God to see.

If there is no blood, He does not care what kind of person is inside the house. Perhaps you have indeed not committed any sins, but will you die? Yes. No matter how many good deeds a person does, helping many people, doing many good things, if you have not accepted Jesus, your end is still death. Because this is God’s standard; this is the sign of God’s salvation. Hallelujah! This blood is the covenant between God and man.

In Exodus 24:8, Moses sprinkled the blood on the Israelites and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words!”

You see, in the Old Testament, countless times when they sinned, the matter of blood was mentioned because this blood is God’s evidence; it is the evidence of your salvation; it is the evidence of your forgiveness!

Let me share a little story with you, brothers and sisters: Once, Moody was talking to someone about Jesus. Moody told him that if he believed in Jesus, he would be saved. But this person was always afraid. What was he afraid of? He was afraid that if he believed, he might still go to hell. Because he could not see, he thought, “If I believe today, will my life be the same as today? I can’t see it.” You may not feel it either, and you are always afraid that you might still go to hell. What should you do? At that time, Moody told him a lot, but he still had some doubts and fears.

When he was leaving, Moody said to the man, “Think about it; isn’t there a story about Noah’s Ark in the Bible?” He said, “Yes.” Moody continued, “When the flood came, was Noah’s family inside the ark?” The man said, “Yes!”

Moody then asked, “Do you think Noah was afraid that the boat would sink by itself? Today, Noah is already inside the ark, and he is still worried. What if the boat sinks? Isn’t that a bit foolish?”

Brothers and sisters, you are already in Jesus Christ, so do not worry that you will fall into hell. Amen! Because who closed the door of the ark? God closed it; it was not Noah who could go out whenever he wanted. Just like today, after you are saved, if you want to come out, can you? You cannot come out. Just like the door of the ark, when God “slammed” it shut, if Noah heard someone outside shouting, “Let us come up! We know we were wrong; we want to be saved!” Noah might say, “I would love to let you in, but I cannot open the door! I cannot go out!”

Once you are saved, you will not perish! Just like this blood, as long as you apply it, you are in the house, and you do not need to worry anymore. The angel of death will never break into a house with blood because that is God’s justice.

Today, we are all under God’s protection. Jesus has already died for us, so God cannot punish us a second time. All the sins in our lives, when God sees our sins, Jesus suddenly stands before us and says, “I died for him.” So, when Jesus died for us on the cross, God could no longer punish us because the righteous God can only punish sin once.

So, after Jesus died for us, we live because of Him. It is either the lamb dies, or the firstborn dies. It’s that simple, brothers and sisters. So God said to the Israelites: “Either you apply the blood of the lamb and let the lamb die for you, or your firstborn will die.”

Today, God loves me this much and saves us this way. Hallelujah! So when we rely on Jesus Christ and believe that Jesus Christ has died for us, for our sins, we no longer have to bear the punishment for our sins. Thank the Lord!

So when God comes to take us, what does He look for? When you accepted the Lord Jesus, you said, “Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Savior in life, believing that Your precious blood shed on the cross has cleansed me of all my sins.”

When you accept this, God gives you a mark, and that mark is that the Holy Spirit will enter you. So in the future, when Jesus comes again to take His people back, He will look and see if you have the Holy Spirit. “Come with me!”

It is not that you have been to church that allows you to enter the kingdom of heaven; it is whether you have the Holy Spirit inside you. This is very important. Just like the Israelites back then, God does not look at you; He looks at the blood of the lamb.

So we rely on Jesus Christ, and we are saved. We are in God’s salvation through the precious blood that Christ shed. There is one who has already died for us, so today we live for Christ. This is what the Bible tells us: the old has passed away; all has become new. Today, we live not for ourselves but in Christ; Christ lives in us, and what is “inside you” is the Holy Spirit.

Today, every person who believes in Jesus Christ has been given a mark, a proof that the Holy Spirit is inside them. So every person who believes in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit will lead them every day, and they will live a life led by the Holy Spirit. Do you believe you are saved today? Yes. Do you believe Jesus Christ has shed His precious blood and cleansed your sins? Yes. Because today, God does not look at you; He looks at Jesus Christ.

Now, we have a difficult question that many people misunderstand: Some people have already believed in Jesus, but their behavior is still very poor. Are such people saved? Yes, they are saved; you must be sure. Today, God does not look at your behavior to judge whether you are saved; He looks at whether you have accepted Jesus Christ.

Let’s think about this from another perspective. The Israelites inside the house with blood on the door, were they all people who had never sinned? No. Did they have sins? Yes. Do you believe they were saved? Yes, they were saved because there was blood of the lamb on the door, and the angel of death could not enter. They were already saved. From this, we can see that our salvation is based on the blood of Christ, not on human good behavior.

The next day, God brought these people out of Egypt. Did you find that these people behaved well afterward? No, they often complained and grumbled at the slightest problem. This tells us that just because you believe does not mean you will immediately become a saint. No. You will still complain like the Israelites. So, are you saved? You are still saved. The moment a person accepts the Lord Jesus as their Savior, they are already saved. Hallelujah!

So why do we sometimes feel weak and behave poorly? What should we do? Is it because God’s salvation is incomplete? No. We just talked about the first half of today’s message, which is about “being saved through the blood of the lamb.” The second half will address how to solve the problem of being sometimes strong and sometimes weak. I don’t want to be like this, but I can’t seem to get rid of this problem. What should I do?

Next time, we will share what those people were doing inside the house. Do you know what they were doing? They were eating the meat of the lamb inside the house. When they ate the meat of the lamb, they gained strength! The weak ones ate the meat of the lamb and were filled with strength. Next time, we will share how Christians, those who are saved, can become victorious.

Let’s pray together:

Loving Father, we thank and praise You for Your grace. The moment we accepted Jesus, God began to count our days; the days before that are not counted. We believe that from now on, every day we offer to the Lord, You will remember.

And You no longer remember our transgressions and sins. Because the precious blood of Jesus has completely redeemed us from these evils. We believe our lives are saved because we are already in Jesus Christ.

Now, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because it is the blood of the lamb that has redeemed us. Thank the Lord, we know today that we are already saved people, and no one can deceive us anymore. We are firmly placed in You, thank and praise the Lord, Hallelujah!

Once again, we thank the Father. Thank You for giving us such salvation. We know that this salvation has nothing to do with our behavior because this blood is not for us to see; it is for God to see. You know the efficacy of this precious blood; You know what the blood of Your Son covers because it can redeem us from all our sins and save us from evil.

Lord, thank You for giving us such grace. God loves the world; You love me so much that You sent Your only Son, Jesus Christ, to me so that I would not perish but have eternal life. Lord, I thank You and praise You. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen!

Glory be to our God! In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray, Amen!
